Sustainability & Responsibility

Craftsmanship, Longevity & Responsibility

At Oficina Inglesa, we believe that sustainability begins with longevity.

The most sustainable piece of furniture is not one that is designed to be replaced in a few years, but one that remains valued, useful and beautiful for generations. Our ambition is to create furniture that will be passed from one generation to the next, becoming the antiques of tomorrow.

Every Oficina Inglesa piece is made to order and handcrafted in Portugal using traditional cabinet-making, upholstery and finishing techniques. By manufacturing only what is required, we avoid excess inventory and focus our resources on creating furniture of lasting value rather than disposable consumption.

We believe that true sustainability is inseparable from quality. Furniture that is thoughtfully designed, carefully made and properly maintained can remain in use for decades. Many of the traditional techniques used in our workshop today have changed little over centuries, and we remain committed to preserving those skills for future generations.

Approximately 80% of our production takes place within our own workshop, where cabinet makers, upholsterers, finishers and craftsmen work together under one roof. The remaining specialist processes are carried out by long-standing local partners, allowing every piece to be produced entirely within Portugal.

Our furniture is handcrafted in Portugal and produced through a long-established European supply chain. We work with a network of specialist suppliers, many of whom are located close to our workshop and with whom we have collaborated for well over a decade, and in many cases nearly two decades. This close relationship allows us to maintain high standards of quality, traceability and consistency while supporting the preservation of traditional skills within one of Europe's most important furniture-making regions.

The majority of our team has been with the company for more than a decade, with many members having spent a significant part of their professional lives with us. We continue to invest in apprenticeship and training programmes to ensure that specialist skills such as cabinet making, carving, upholstery and finishing are passed from one generation to the next.

Timber, veneers, fabrics and other materials are sourced from reputable European suppliers who are expected to comply with applicable environmental and labour standards. We seek to use responsibly sourced materials wherever practicable and work with suppliers who share our commitment to quality, craftsmanship and responsible manufacturing. Many of our suppliers hold recognised certifications and operate according to rigorous environmental and quality standards.

Where possible, materials are repurposed, recycled or reused within our workshop. Timber offcuts generated during production are utilised within our manufacturing process, while packaging materials, cardboard and paper are recycled through specialist waste-management partners. We continually review our operations to reduce waste and improve efficiency wherever practical.

To minimise unnecessary transport movements, shipments are consolidated wherever possible through regular scheduled deliveries from our workshop in Portugal to destinations around the world. We work with a trusted network of long-standing logistics and shipping partners who share our commitment to quality, reliability and responsible business practices.

By manufacturing in Europe and sourcing predominantly from European suppliers, we are also able to reduce the distances travelled by many of the materials used in our furniture before production begins.

Our commitment extends beyond the furniture itself. By supporting traditional craftsmanship, long-term employment, apprenticeship programmes and local specialist suppliers, we help preserve skills and knowledge that might otherwise disappear.

We believe that sustainability is not measured solely by how a product is made, but by how long it remains valued. Every piece we create is intended to stand the test of time, becoming part of a family's story for decades to come.

The antiques of tomorrow are being made today.
